Job 5 -compare and contrast

Job 5
  1. Bierce wrote his story, the way it probably would've happened, if a Confederate soldier was found on the Yanks side spying, he would've been hung; on the other hand, Irvings short story was just his wild imagination!
  2. I think the importance in both of their stories is their characters, and the settings.
  3. They both have foolish people! The main characthers both had someone they loved.
  4. I think that Ambrose Bierce's short story is a little bit more superior than Washington Irvings.

  1. I want to make the majority of my comment on your second point.

I think you've touched on a key point here, that the characters of the stories are definitely what make the stories themselves. The events in "Sleepy Hollow" and "Owl Creek Bridge" really aren't all that unique; it's the characters that make the stories stand out.

Your other points are good, too. I especially agree with the first one. Irving's story is drawn from his imagination...we have to wonder if Bierce's story is drawn from a similar experience in his own life.

Can you explain your fourth point further, though? Why do you like Bierce's story more than Irving's?

  2. Yes, I agree with your first point, I do like the way Bierce wrote his story more than Irving's way. Bierce is definitely much more realistic than Irving. Completely agree with you and Rachel! I hadn't thought of the characters and stories that way...
