Job 5 -compare and contrast

1. Bierce wrote his story, the way it probably would've happened, if a Confederate soldier was found on the Yanks side spying, he would've been hung; on the other hand, Irvings short story was just his wild imagination!
2. I think the importance in both of their stories is their characters, and the settings.
3. They both have foolish people! The main characthers both had someone they loved.
4. I think that Ambrose Bierce's short story is a little bit more superior than Washington Irvings.

•  sleepers-"Some loose boards laid upon the sleepers supporting the metals of the railway supplied a footing for him and his executioners -two private soldiers of the Federal army, directed by a sergeant who in civil life may have been a deputy sheriff." (1st page)
• acclivity- "The other bank of the stream was open ground-a gentle acclivity topped with stockade of verticl tree trunks, loopholed for rifles, with a single embrasure through which protruded the muzzle of a brass cannon commanding the bridge."(1st page)
• dignitary- "Death is a dignitary who when he comes announced is to be received with formal manifestations or respect, even by those most familiar with him."(1st page) 
• fixity- "In the code of military etiquete silence and fixity are forms of deference."(1st page)     
• knell-"He wondered what it was, and whether imeassurably distant or near by- it seemed both. Its recurrence was regular, but as slow as the tolling of a death knell."(bottom of page 2)

     Connections-  I think there's a connection, when the Confederate soldier stops and asks for a drink of water and  starts talking to Peyton Farquhar, about the Yanks. Peyton Farquhar, after hearing that any civilian caught interfering with their railroads,bridges,and tunnels would be hanged, he then ask "How far is it to the Owl Creek Bridge?"  (where at that time the Yanks were)This occurrence reminds me of someone wanting to get into trouble and adventure.(chapter 2) Many people today try to push their limits with the law and many other things.The outcome of their decisions normally, turn out to be, the waste of their own lives, that God has given to them for an amazing purpose.

      "Striking through the thoughts of his dear ones was a sound he could neither ignore nor undersand, a sharp, distinct,metalic percussion like the stroke of a blacksmiths's hammer upon the anvil;it had the same ringing quality.  ............. What he heard was the ticking of his watch." Line Ill I.

      Peyton was trying to think of the most important thing he had on this earth-his family. His watch suddenly, and very loudly, disturbed his thinking. He was just listenting to the last seconds, of his life tick away. It's interesting that his watch sounded like a hammer. It makes me wonder whether or not he owned a blacksmith's shop. If I was about to die, I would remember, that I only had a few seconds left on this earth, and probably would be counting those last seconds, just like he was.
